The Custom Ring - Your Own Design

You sketched your dream ring on a napkin at dinner last night. Now what do you do? The process is not really as complicated as you might think.

Oddly enough, the first step is kind of like finding the perfect mate: Look for a patient jewelry craftsman who understands you. Artistry is important, but chemistry is crucial. Many reputable jewelry stores offer customized rings, so ask around for referrals, and then meet with a few designers to find the right person for the job.

Once you’ve settled on a designer, he or she can work with your sketch, pictures or ideas to create a new ring design or modify an existing design to deliver just what you’re looking for. Maybe you want to use a nontraditional stone. Maybe you already have a stone that has sentimental value but needs a new setting. Or maybe you just want a ring that nobody else has, for a unique expression of your style and taste.

Whatever the reason, your designer will produce a finished design on the computer and make a resin or wax model for your approval. Then the final ring can be cast. Local jewelers say the whole process can usually be accomplished within a month, but allow yourself plenty of time to make sure you get the ring of your dreams.
