Selecting the Wedding Planner for You. Experience and Chemistry Are Key

You’ve probably been thinking about your wedding for a long time … maybe even before he popped the question? You know how you want it to look and feel. What you don’t know is how to make it all happen. There are so many things to consider, so many decisions to be made. It’s overwhelming. Maybe you need a wedding planner. But how do you find the right planner for you?

Recommendations from family or friends are good, but if you don’t know someone who has used a planner, you’ll need to do a little research. The savvy bride will pay attention to references from other brides, as well as from other wedding professionals who have worked with a planner you are considering.

Once you have a few names, check out those planners’ Web sites for an idea of the types of services you can expect. A full-service planner can do everything from helping you plan your budget to selecting all your professional service providers to making travel arrangements for out-of-town guests. Determine which services you need, and then make appointments with several planners you’ve researched.

When you meet with the planners, be prepared with a list of questions. Be clear up front about what you want and what you can spend. Be sure you understand each planner’s pricing structure, whether it is a flat fee or a percentage. A skilled planner will make the best possible contracts with vendors and pass savings along to you.

While you’ll want to determine a planner’s experience and credentials, it’s also important to feel a connection. When you’re comfortable with a planner’s qualifications and style, it’s a good bet she’ll be seeing your vision as you do, and she’ll know exactly what it takes to make it happen. You can then sign the contract and relax, confident you are in good hands. ~JSC
