It's More Than the Thought That Counts...Gift Registry Ideas and Trends

Savvy brides and grooms of today have loads more choices than their parents — or even couples married just 10 years ago — when it comes to registering for wedding gifts. Picking out china, silver, and crystal still tops the list, but a lot of nearly-weds are already living together or are merging two fairly-well-equipped households. The basics are often covered, so brides and grooms are registering for upgrades at a variety of stores and boutiques.

Instead of coffeemakers, toasters, and blenders, think grind-and-brew espresso makers, panini presses, and restaurant-quality frozen drink makers. Take it outside with backyard cooking on grills and other barbecue implements. Patio furniture, outdoor lighting, and decorative water features for the terrace are emerging as popular registry items. Big-box stores are selling everything from linens to home electronics and entertainment systems as a way to entice both bride and groom to scan barcodes with gusto — and they are!

Honeymoon registries are another new option for the well-equipped couple. Either through a travel agency or directly through the resort, a honeymoon registry allows guests to pay for certain aspects of the post-wedding trip, including a portion of the hotel bill, a special dinner, spa packages, greens fees, or even excursions the newlyweds can enjoy during their stay. This type of registry is especially great for the guest who wants to gift the couple with “an experience,” and allows many honeymooners to afford a few extra memories from their sentimental journey.

If you’re still not sure where to register, take inventory of your home(s), come up with a wish list then identify 2-4 places your guests can easily access, and start scanning!
