A Baker’s Dozen Questions For a Practical Approach to Your Wedding Cake
Of course you want your wedding cake to be extraordinary — beautiful to look at and scrumptious to taste — but that’s not all there to consider when choosing a baker. Some questions are less glamorous than “Can you make a lemon-blueberry filling?” but they are just as important. Here are some pertinent questions our savvy bakers recommend you ask:
- How long has the baker been in business?
- Does the baker work from a licensed kitchen?
- Is the baker upfront about fees and services?

- Is it clearly spelled out what the baker does and does not provide, such as delivery, cake stands, etc.
- What is the baker’s policy on cancellations or changes?
- Are the cakes made from scratch or from mixes?
- Are the cakes fresh or frozen?
- If the cakes are frozen, how far ahead of the wedding date are they made?
- Will the baker work from photographs to recreate the cake you want?
- Does the baker offer a meeting for you and your fiancé to taste-test your options?
- How many other weddings is the baker doing on your wedding day and does the bakery have sufficient staff to handle them all?
- Can the baker provide testimonials from couples who loved their cakes?
- Have you read the contract carefully to be sure there are no surprises?
Choosing a baker is just one of many wedding tasks that need to be started well in advance. The majority of bakers will advise brides to place their cake orders as soon as possible after booking venues for the ceremony and reception! ~JSC Content Contribution~ Nona’s Sweets
