What are some ways we can make our out-of-town guests feel welcome?

SAVVY Q: What are some ways we can make our out-of-town guests feel welcome?

SAVVY A:
As our society becomes more and more mobile, chances are some of your guests will be traveling by plane, train, and automobile to get to your big event. So what can you do to make their stay as pleasant and easy as possible? Here are a few secrets to keeping these special guests in a celebratory mood:

  • Worldwide Wedding: Setting up a Web site specifically for your wedding is an easy and cost-effective way to keep everyone near and far up to date on the latest itinerary. Web sites can be as creative or simple as you’d like and should include information about lodging, local restaurants, directions to venues, and links to other useful sites. Of course, for any of your friends and family who don’t own a computer, make a note and get them in the loop via phone or mail.

  • Welcome Bags or Baskets: Everyone likes to feel welcome, and nothing says, “I’m glad you’re here!” like a cheery welcome bag waiting at the hotel. These goody bags will show how much you appreciate that your guests made the extra effort to travel to your wedding. Include snacks, water, maps, a list of events they are to attend, and directions. Consider adding information from your local chamber of commerce or visitor center. Many hotels will help you organize special activities such as golf outings, shopping, sightseeing, etc.

  • Happy to Help: If you have an especially organized, patient, and accommodating friend or family member eager to help, designate him or her as your guests’ “help desk.” Make sure this person knows the area well and is up on the latest details of your event. Whoever accepts the mission will be the contact for guests who have questions or concerns, or who just need to know if they should take a left or a right. Be sure to recognize your go-to person on your wedding program and at the reception. Having someone to manage these details means you can concentrate on other matters, knowing your guests are in good hands.

Above all, keep in mind that your out-of-town guests are here for you. With a little thought and effort, you can make them feel especially welcome and appreciated! ~CM
